Wetiko

Wetiko is a term used to describe a psychosis or sickness of the spirit that can possess human beings and influence their perceptions and actions1 . It is a concept found in Native American mythologies, particularly among the Algonquin-speaking peoples, where it is portrayed as a cannibalistic spirit that embodies greed and excess and can possess human beings2 3 . The term “wetiko” is an alternative form of “wihtikow” in the Cree language, and it has many alternative translations4 5 . Wetiko is believed to cause symptoms such as insatiable greed and destruction of the environment, and it is sometimes associated with the concept of “Wendigo psychosis”4 . In modern times, the term “wetiko” has been used to describe the destructive effects of capitalism and other forms of societal and cultural pathology
